Grand Challenges Explorations

Deadline: 9 November 2016

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and its funding partners have several open calls on a variety of health topics:

• Assess Family Planning Needs, Preferences and Behaviors to Inform Innovations in Contraceptive Technologies
• Develop Novel Platforms to Accelerate Contraceptive Drug Discovery
• Design New Solutions to Data Integration for Malaria Elimination
• Accelerate Development of New Therapies for Childhood Cryptosporidium Infection

YSEALI Academic Fellows

Deadline: various, by country

The US Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative is inviting undergraduates or recently graduated students between the ages of 18 and 26 to the US for a 5-week institute on the civic engagement, environment and natural resources management, or entrepreneurship and economic development. The program includes engagement with American peers and concludes with a trip to Washington, DC, to meet US governmental representatives.

Fogarty Emerging Global Leader

Deadline: 14 December 2016

The Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award  aims to provide research support and protected time to a research scientist from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who holds an academic junior faculty position or research scientist appointment at an LMIC academic or research institution. Applications are invited from LMIC research scientists from any health-related discipline who propose both critically needed career development activities and a research project that is highly relevant to the health priorities of their country.

IDEA WILD Grant for equipment

Deadline: year-round

IDEA WILD has grants of up to $1,500 for equipment for biodiversity conservation and related research projects. Equipment is sent to a contact in the US (that you identify, such as relatives, visiting  professors, or colleagues) who then transport equipment to the grantee.

Orskov Foundation Student Grants

Deadline: 31 December 2016

The Orskov Foundation provides scholarships for students in developing countries to support training for graduate degrees. Preference is giving in the area of sustainable land use problems with an emphasis on animal, plant, and soil interactions to alleviate poverty and/or adapt to climate change. Grants are for up to $2,500.

Post-doctoral Fellowship Opportunities

Deadline: various

• The Earth Institute at Columbia University, US: The EI Fellows program provides innovative postdoctoral scholars with the opportunity to build a foundation in one of the core disciplines represented within the Earth Institute (i.e. social, earth, biological, engineering, and health sciences), while at the same time acquiring the breadth of cross-disciplinary expertise needed to address critical issues related to sustainable development. The program is for 2 years and starts July-September 1, 2017. Deadline: 1 November, 2016.
• AXA Post-doctoral Fellowship: AXA is offering 25 fellowships for 18 to 24 months at an AXA research center. AXA’s mission is to fund basic science dedicated to developing a better understanding of global risks. Deadline is 3 November 2016 or 30 May 2017; applicants must pre-register on their website.
• Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future: This program supports women scientists seeking PhD degrees or postdoctoral research in the physical sciences, engineering, technology, and related disciplines who already have applied, been admitted, or enrolled in a program. Deadline: 18 November 2016.
• Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program: Several types of fellowships are awarded for study at Smithsonian Institutions, including the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Deadline: 1 December 2016.

Courses on Scientific and Technical Writing

• The FAO, along with CIRAD, INASP, and IMARK, have created a course on scientific and technical writing. They cover everything you need to know from development of a project to publishing the final manuscript. The course is self-paced and takes about 31 hours to complete. Course also available in French.
• Latindex, with AuthorAid-INASP, is offering an online course in Habilidades de Escritura Científica, from 4 October to 14 November (in Spanish).
• AuthorAid-INASP is offering an online course on Research Writing from 18 October to 28 November. The previous session of this course had over 1,500 researchers from 79 countries. Enrollment deadline is 16 October.

Insider’s Guide to Accessing NLM Data: E-utilities for PubMed

The US National Library of Medicine is presenting a free webinar on Wednesday, October 19, 2-3 pm EST on using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for PubMed and other NCBI databases. This class will start with the very basics of APIs before showing you how to get started using the E-utilities API to search and retrieve records from PubMed. The class will also showcase some specific tools and utilities that information specialists can use to work with E-utilities, helping to prepare you for subsequent Insider’s Guide classes.
